How to Build a Hammered Dulcimer Book: Errors and OmissionsA Dulcimer Builder's Do-It-Yourself GuidebookErrata, Corrections, Etc. Note! These errata and corrections apply only to books printed before July 2003. Here's a
quick way to determine if the following notes apply to your book. Look on Page 4, towards the bottom, for the quote beginning, "At once the flutter of Angel's wings... ." If your book reads "symbols" as the last word in the quote, then the following corrections apply to you. If the spelling of the word is printed correctly as "cymbals," then your book is completely up to date. Pages 34, 37, Rough and Finished Rail Lengths The Rail Board
Rough and Finished lengths are incorrect in that they are too long. The indicated lengths have no affect on the finished dulcimer, as the excess length is cut off in subsequent steps. However, the correct lengths should be: Rough Short Rail, 26" Long Rail, 46 3/4" Right Side Rail, 27 5/8" Left Side Rail, 25 1/4"
Finished Short Rail, 25 3/4" Long Rail, 46 1/2" Right Side Rail, 27 3/8"
Left Side Rail, 25"
A Further Note About Lengths: If your finished dulcimer is either longer or shorter than the dimensions in the book, don't worry about it. As long as your angles are correct, and the fit is good, your dulcimer will be fine.
Pages 94 & 95, Bass Bridges The length of the Bass Bridge should be cut to 20 5/8" rather than 20 1/4".
Pages 117-118, Fitting the Sound board The instructions for attaching the side bridges to the sound board indicates the need to use 5 screws and
washers per side bridge. One dulcimer builder experienced some separation between the side bridge and the sound board at the higher strings of the Treble Bridge. To make sure this does not happen with your dulcimer, I recommend that you use 10 screws and washers per side bridge rather than 5.
Page 131, The Tuning Chart Graphic The Tuning Chart graphic on Page 131 is incorrect regarding the tuning of the two higher notes on the Bass Bridge. The correct tuning should be B-flat and C, as shown below:
